Dark Spots / Melasma
Although melasma is considered a condition with a primarily aesthetic connotation, it can cause emotional impact and consequently affect family, social and professional life.
Melasma occurs when melanocytes – the cells which produce pigment in the skin (melanin) – produce too much pigment, leading to the development of brownish-colored patches, symmetrical in exposed areas of the skin, especially on the face.
Causes that can enhance its appearance:
exposure to ultraviolet rays and visible light
hormonal factors, especially pregnancy and the use of oral contraceptives
heat
severe dryness of the skin
some cosmetics
inflammation
